
Kigali Independent University ULK Hosts Human Rights Sensitization Campaign for Students
On Friday, 6 March 2026, Kigali Independent University ULK hosted a Human Rights Sensitization Campaign aimed at strengthening students’ understanding of fundamental human rights and their responsibilities as active citizens.
The awareness session was organized by the National Commission for Human Rights (NCHR) in partnership with the Delegation of the European Union to Rwanda, as part of broader efforts to promote human rights education among young people. The initiative sought to equip students with essential knowledge on human rights principles, legal frameworks, and mechanisms for preventing and reporting human rights violations.
Human rights education plays a vital role in shaping responsible citizens by building knowledge, skills, and attitudes that promote respect for human dignity and justice. During the session, students were introduced to key concepts related to fundamental human rights, civic responsibilities, and the importance of active participation in promoting equality and democratic values.
A representative from the National Commission for Human Rights emphasized the importance of empowering young people with knowledge about their rights and responsibilities.

“Young people play a critical role in shaping the future of our societies. Providing them with knowledge about human rights equips them with the tools needed to promote justice, equality, and accountability within their communities,” Umurungi Providence, the Chairperson of National Commission of Human Rights noted during the session.
Speaking during the event, a representative from Kigali Independent University ULK welcomed the initiative and highlighted the importance of such engagements in higher learning institutions.

“Universities have a key role in shaping responsible and informed citizens. Sensitizing students about human rights helps them understand not only their rights but also their civic responsibilities in building a just and democratic society,” the university Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Martins Onyekwelu Onourah stated.
The sensitization also aimed to strengthen students’ ability to identify human rights violations and understand available prevention and reporting mechanisms. By empowering students with this knowledge, the initiative contributes to building a generation that is better prepared to uphold justice and promote a culture of respect for human rights.
The event reflects ULK’s commitment to academic excellence and civic engagement, providing students with opportunities to engage in meaningful discussions on social justice, democratic values, and responsible citizenship.
Through initiatives such as this, Kigali Independent University ULK continues to foster an environment where students are not only academically prepared but also equipped to contribute positively to society and the promotion of human rights in Rwanda and beyond.
