ULK Gisenyi Campus Boosts Community Welfare Through Hygiene and CBHI Outreach in Nyakiriba

On Saturday, 30th  August 2025, ULK Gisenyi Campus partnered with Nyakiriba Sector’s local administration for a meaningful Umuganda activity. Under the theme “Community Work on Hygiene and Supporting Vulnerable Citizens with Community-Based Health Insurance (CBHI)”, the initiative focused on enhancing public sanitation and extending healthcare access to underserved families.

Held at Mahoko Center, the Umuganda saw volunteers engage in clearing drainage systems and communal areas and repairing the road leading to ADEPR Mahoko Church.

These practical interventions helped beautify the neighborhood and improve infrastructure, contributing to long-term community resilience.

Honored by the presence of influential individuals and stakeholders, the event brought together: Mr. Tuyishime Jean Bosco, Executive Secretary, Nyakiriba Sector, Postgraduate students from ULK Gisenyi Campus, ADEPR Mahoko Church, Local Good Governance Officer, Community Health Workers and Interested local residents

The Executive Secretary – Mr. Tuyishime Jean Bosco expressed heartfelt thanks to all participants and emphasized the importance of collaboration for community betterment.

Pastor of ADEPR Mahoko Church Reverend BWIKO Jean Bosco,  urged attendees to uphold moral standards by steering clear of drug abuse, early pregnancies, and delinquency, while championing the value of education.

Mr. NTEZIYAREMYE Stanislas who represented ULK Gisenyi campus underscored the longstanding partnership between ULK and Nyakiriba sector, and reaffirmed the university’s dedication to social responsibility. Notably, students from the Development Studies Department contributed RWF 323,000 for CBHI support, bringing their total contributions (across MBA and MDS students) to RWF 923,000.
The student representative NDACYAYISENGA Prudence thanked Community Health Workers for their service and encouraged everyone to prioritize both physical and mental health as essential pillars of sustainable development.

In his closing remarks the Executive Secretary of Nyakiriba sector Mr. TUYISHIME Jean Bosco applauded the international makeup of ULK’s student body and their positive impact on local development extolling the spirit of African unity. He closed with an appeal for continued solidarity, humility, and unity in pursuit of collective advancement.

This outreach program achieved several meaningful outcomes including, enhancing local sanitation, fostering a cleaner and healthier environment, improved road access, supporting safe movement around ADEPR Mahoko Church, expanded healthcare coverage through CBHI for vulnerable households and strengthened partnership between ULK Gisenyi Campus and Nyakiriba Sector, grounded in shared values and community-centered action.
