ULK recognized as the first University to promote the reading culture of books written in Kinyarwanda

On Friday, November 1st, 2024, Kigali Independent University ULK was honored with a prestigious award for being the first university to significantly promote the culture of reading books written in Kinyarwanda. The award was given to ULK by Rwanda Writers Federation (RWF) during a special book launch ceremony held at INTARE ARENA at Rusororo. The book is entitled “President Paul Kagame’s Journey to Victory”. The author is Mr. Hategekimana Richard, the Chairman of the Rwanda Writers Federation.

The recognition was given upon ULK for its exemplary efforts in fostering a reading culture among students, particularly through its acquisition of over 1,500 books written in Kinyarwanda. This initiative demonstrates the university’s commitment to encouraging the study and preservation of Rwanda’s rich cultural heritage, while also promoting literacy in the native language. In acknowledgment of these efforts, ULK received a trophy and a framed photograph, which were offered to the university’s Founder and President. Additionally, the university was gifted one hard copy of the book entitled “China and Rwanda”.

An elegant award presented to Prof. Dr. Rwigamba Balinda, featuring his image alongside ULK's emblem, celebrating the university's exceptional efforts in promoting Kinyarwanda literature and preserving Rwanda's Cultural heritage.

The ceremony also recognized other institutions for their contributions to this cause. Among the universities that received similar awards were East African University Rwanda (EAUR) and University of Kigali (UoK). In line with its ongoing promotion of reading culture, ULK made a further commitment during the event by purchasing 50 additional copies the launched book. This act reinforces the university’s dedication to promoting reading culture and supporting the local literary community, ensuring that students have access to important works written in their native language. This recognition highlights the vital role that ULK plays in shaping the intellectual and cultural background of the nation, and ULK’s efforts serve as a model for other institutions aiming to promote education, literacy, and national pride through the Kinyarwanda language.
