ULK Business Incubation Center Public Lecture: A Gateway to Financing Opportunities for Young Entrepreneurs

On July 26, 2024, Kigali Independent University (ULK) hosted a highly anticipated public lecture organized by the ULK Business Incubation Center. The event, held in the ULK Conference Room, focused on “The Opportunities for Financing Young Entrepreneurs and Start-Up Businesses in Rwanda”. Students from both ULK and UPI (ULK Polytechnic Institute) were present to gain insights into financing opportunities and entrepreneurial strategies.

The event kicked off with a warm welcome from ULK Vice Chancellor, Dr. Sikubwabo Cyprien who greeted the audience and introduced the esteemed guests.

Mr. Banamwana Gilbert, the Director of the ULK Business Incubation Center, then took the stage to deliver an inspiring speech, emphasizing the significance of the lecture in fostering entrepreneurial growth and financial literacy among students and young entrepreneurs.

Mr. Munyeshyaka Vincent, the Director General of the Business Development Fund (BDF), provided a comprehensive overview of financial inclusion in Rwanda. He highlighted the collaboration between the government and financial institutions to improve access to finance, particularly through the Finscope Survey. Mr. Munyeshyaka emphasized BDF’s role as a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Development Bank of Rwanda, dedicated to assisting SMEs, especially those lacking collateral, including ULK and UPI students. His presentation underscored BDF’s commitment to bridging the financial gap and promoting economic development.

Following Mr. Munyeshyaka’s presentation, Mr. Jackson Kwikiriza, the Executive Director of the Association of MicroFinance in Rwanda (AMIR), expressed his gratitude to ULK’s leadership and Mr. Banamwana Gilbert for their pivotal roles in organizing the event. He engaged the audience with thought-provoking questions about their banking habits and savings practices, leading to an interactive and engaging environment. Mr. Kwikiriza outlined the essential steps for financial success: opening a bank or mobile money account, saving, requesting loans, and starting a business. His insights provided a clear roadmap for aspiring entrepreneurs.

Mr. GAKURU James, the Sales and Marketing Manager of Radiant Yacu, spoke about the various insurance products offered by his company, including medical, motor, and agricultural insurance. His presentation highlighted the importance of insurance in safeguarding businesses and individuals against unforeseen risks, underscoring Radiant Yacu’s commitment to supporting the entrepreneurial community.

The event concluded with a lively Q&A session, where students had the opportunity to voice their concerns and seek advice from the panelists. Emmanuel, a ULK student, raised a pertinent issue regarding the complexities of obtaining loans from banks. In response, Mr. Munyeshyaka emphasized the need for financial education and capacity building, urging financial institutions to collaborate with universities in providing business planning, coaching, and monitoring services. Another student inquired about the fate of savings when a policyholder passes away, to which Mr. GAKURU assured that Radiant Yacu would diligently reach out to the concerned families to ensure the smooth transfer of benefits.

The Vice Chancellor concluded the session by addressing the question of internship and employment opportunities for ULK and UPI students. He assured the audience that ULK would actively collaborate with financial institutions to provide valuable internship opportunities, enhancing students’ practical skills and employability.
